Myriorama is the community engagement arts project accompanying the newly commissioned Hope Street Limited production of Alice Through the Winter Gardens which celebrates the glamorous history of Blackpool’s iconic building through this interactive production. Weaving a magical mix of theatre, film, illusion, music, dance and design, audiences will travel around the building – and through time – to celebrate the film stars, musicians and politicians whose voices still echo from its walls. Become a part of Wonderland and experience the Winter Gardens as never before!
Myriorama has two key aims:
Firstly to work with members of Claremont Park Community Centre and members of other community groups across Blackpool in a new and interesting creative process.
Secondly for audiences to be made once again curious about the architecture, places and spaces of Blackpool, in particular The Winter Gardens, and to introduce something old, something new and something of artistic and creative merit.
Myriorama is a project that was put out to tender in which artist Garth Gratrix was selected by a panel including community members of Claremont Park Community Centre.
The origins for Gratrix’s project proposal was to create a piece of art that references the Winter Gardens in its theatricality by constructing a large-scale dressing room screen, however in such a way so that the pieces can be interchangeable in support of the Myriorama style and stacked away when not being used. The work in this format takes on a continuous new identity for people to interact with and see change over time in its singular elements or entire glory.
Garth is an emerging contemporary artist with many varied exhibitions to date. From painting and drawing through to installation, sculpture and performance work, Garth draws upon personal experience and moments of interaction and encounter. With this in mind the artist work often uses household and personal items in an amalgamation of mixed media outcomes.
